First-Second Grade

Fruit Bowl Still life

Inspired by Cezanne's still lives, this 4 day project kept the first and second student's attention. It taught students careful observation of art to learn techniques, and the basic ideas of form on a 2D plane. It also introduced terms such as still-life, shading, and light sources! This project used chalk pastels, construction paper scraps, sketchbooks, oil pastels, pencils, and tempera paint.

Lesson Plan

How to draw a fruit bowl?

Students first create a form tower, made out of circles of construction paper with shadows in chalk pastels. After, we began to relate spherical shapes to fruits such as apples- the shading and light sources are very similar! Without any instruction on how to draw it, I had the students draw 'a still life of a fruit bowl.' As you can see, it produced many different results- some students understood concepts such as overlapping and some had no idea. This informed the discussion tomorrow when they begin to draw their final fruit bowls!

Finished Fruit Bowls

We observed Cezanne's work, taking note of things such as size relation and overlapping. After having an in depth analysis and discussion of a fruit bowl, students drew their revised version on a sheet of paper with pencil, and then oil pastel. The next day, they yet again observed Cezanne and noticed the fruits were not one singular color- each had multiple different colors. They incorporated this into their final shading technique, along with form and shadow we learned with the sphere towers!

They were so proud of how their fruit bowls turned out, and they all understood the concepts really well! Look at the evolution from the above photos just over 2 days!
