Stratton Academy of the Arts

This semester was definitely an interesting one. It was taught in late 2020, and was one of my first experiences. These lesson plans were taught on zoom, not the classroom, though they produced much success!

The lessons plan included are a few examples from the curriculum plan. They are named off of the artists we referenced when creating the lesson. Each of my fellow students created one lesson, and we often intersected and assisted while working together for certain lessons. I personally made the lesson on JeeYoung Lee and worked with one other on Kehinde Wiley, which are the ones I've inserted in here. The other lesson ideas are visible on the group curriculum and student portfolio.

Due to the fact that Stratton is a Magnet school, which attracts students of all different backgrounds, all of our projects contained exploration of one's self and identity through art. Especially during zoom, keeping in touch with one's self and emotions is important for mental health.

The student exhibition is listed on a site that we created and gave students access to in order to reference back to the lesson or catch up if they had missed the class.

Group Curriculum

JeeYoung Lee, "Reflective Seeing"

For JeeYoung Lee's 2-day lesson, 'Reflective Seeing', I created all the materials and ideas for the project in line with my group's ideas.

It was a mini installation-based project falling in line with the ideas of self. The project encouraged students to think of a moment in their past that they felt strong emotion, good or bad. They then learned about metaphors and symbolism, with examples from myself with object and color symbolism.

How can they attach symbolism to emotions they have felt from past experiences?

The symbols or metaphors they create then inform the creation of their diorama. As seen from the student examples, symbols such as the moon, beautiful blue skies, black skateboards, or sunsets matched their emotions.

Kehinde Wiley, "Power Portraits"

For Kehinde Wiley's 2-day lesson, 'Power Portraits', I split the creation of lesson materials with Ms. Carli, a classmate of mine. I created half of the presentation and both demo videos and Ms. Carli made the handout. We worked collaboratively on the lesson plan.

Kehinde Wiley sheds a light on people who have been underrepresented in paintings throughout history by including them in his own portraits. Not only that, but he puts them in posings of power which are referenced from historical paintings.

We took this idea and incorporated it into the lesson, asking students to think about what poses make them feel 'powerful'. We taught the students the basics of creating a portrait with proportion.
