Fourth Grade
Landscapes
In one of the first projects of the quarter, students make a landscape with space and depth, using relative size, overlapping, and foreground/middle ground/background. They learn about Classical and Cultural landscapes, analyzing examples, which then informs how they create their artwork. They set their own parameters for success and adjusted their projects accordingly.

Lesson Plan
Investigating Landscapes
Students observe Poussin's 'Landscape with a Calm', talking about Classical vs Cultural landscapes, and revisiting foreground, middle ground, and background. Students sketch their landscapes in their sketchbooks before starting on the paper. Once they have their sketch on the paper, they begin to paint using tempera.
Finished Artwork
Students set their own parameters for success by, as a class, identifying what a 'successful' project was versus and 'unsuccessful' project. They make corrections based on those parameters. Here are some finished artworks!
